Lovesong by Abi Morgan

The Society is gearing up for its first mainstage production of the season by presenting Lovesong by Abi Morgan in Studio 132, 132 East High Street, from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th November 2019.

The weekday performances start at 7:30pm while the Saturday performance will be a matinee starting at 2:30pm.

Lovesong opens with a couple, Margaret and William, as they take that leap into married life in a foreign country. William is a dentist while Margaret is a homemaker and together they make the move to the States. Their journey through life is told by the couple in old age as they interact on stage with their younger selves.

Over the years, both Margaret and William flirt with extra-marital affairs and struggle with the constraints of the expectations of married life. William makes financial decisions early on without her input; she takes a part time job against his wishes. And together they both struggle with the void left by their inability to have a child. The piece moves backwards and forwards through time as the four actors tell the story of this couple’s love, their marriage, and their shared yearning. The two versions of the couple interweave on stage and occasionally there are moments when they seem to catch a glimpse of their other selves in the past or the future.

Lovesong was written by Abi Morgan, one of today’s most exciting playwrights. Born in Cardiff, Morgan has written some very well-known television scripts including Sex Traffic and The Hour, while film works include Brick Lane, The Iron Lady, Shame and Suffragette. In 2013, she won the Primetime Emmy Award for The Hour.

Lovesong, which contains some infrequent strong language, has been described as a truly beautiful, thought-provoking piece of theatre, one that elicited sobs from many in the audience at previous productions, so you have been warned, remember to take along some tissues.
